He started his Formula One career with Lotus 1980. Runner-up in the world championship on two occasions, he became world champion 1992 and in the same year announced his retirement from Formula One racing, having won a British record of 30 Grand Prix races. He returned to Formula One racing 1994. He joined the Newman-Haas team 1993 to compete in the PPG IndyCar championship series and won the championship in his debut season. He returned to Formula One racing in selected races 1994, and signed for Mercedes-McLaren 1995. However, after experiencing problems with Mercedes-McLaren cars during the 1995 season, he parted company with the team.
